Same-day crowns use digital CAD/CAM, which allows a dentist to custom-craft a permanent dental crown right in their office while you wait.
How does the appointment work?
First the dentist will numb the tooth. The dentist then shapes the tooth by removing any damaged or problematic tooth structure.
Then, instead of taking traditional putty impressions, which are uncomfortable and messy, your teeth will be digitally scanned. We use a machine called Trios. These scans are highly accurate and precise. They make a 3D digital image. That image is then loaded into a computer program that your dentist will use to design your crown.
Next, the crown is designed in a design program. The crown is designed to match the shape, size and color of your existing teeth.
The design is then sent to the dental mill which is a type of CNC machine specific for dentistry. The mill that we use is a VHF Z4 dental mill. The crown is milled out of a solid block of strong and durable ceramic or zirconia.
After the crown comes out of the mill it is stained to assist in the color matching of your other teeth. It is then glazed to make the crown glossy and smooth. The crown is then placed into a furnace that crystalizes the material increasing the strength of the material.
Lastly, your new permanent crown will be cemented into place. The whole visit usually takes about two hours.
